Obituary of Leslie Baker

George Leslie Baker, 88, long-time missionary to Haiti and former Iola, Kansas resident, died Tuesday, December 30, 2008, at Tampa, Florida. Leslie was born June 21, 1920, at Iola, Kansas, to William Warner and Ada Mae (Thurston) Baker. He grew up on the family farm northwest of Iola, in the Carpenter district. He attended the Bible Baptist College at Springfield, Missouri. In 1945, Leslie married Floya Lee Lorance at Eureka, Kansas. They made their home in the Geneva area before moving to Wichita, then Dodge City before making their home at Holland, Michigan. Floya Lee died in 2003. Leslie served as a minister before entering the missionary field. He has served in Haiti for over 30 years. He attended the Iola Baptist Temple when visiting here. SURVIVORS: 2 Daughters; Judy Bass & husband, Jerry of Iola, Kansas, and Debbie King of Iola, Kansas 1 Grandson; Steve Mikuski of Iola, Kansas 3 Great Grandchildren A number of Nieces and Nephews He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary A. Jones, and by three brother, Raymond, Guy and Merrill Baker and an infant brother. Cremation has taken place. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2:30 p.m., Friday, January 23, 2009, at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate. MEMORIALS: Suggested to Iola Baptist Temple for Missions.
