Obituary of Richard Terry Adams

Richard Terry Adams, age 92, of Kincaid, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, March 22, 2016, at Guest Home Estates, Garnett; following complications of a stroke. He was born October 25, 1923, at Kincaid, Kansas, the fourth of five children born to Terry Wilson and Marietta Mae (Hobert) Adams. Richard's mother passed away on Christmas when he was twelve years old. On Halloween of the following year his father passed away. At this point his older siblings, particularly his eldest brother took responsibility for raising him, along with the help and love of other family and friends. He graduated from Kincaid Rural High School with the Class of 1942. He then joined the U.S. Navy in 1943. Richard was a veteran of WWII, spending 25 months overseas on the Islands of Samoa, Futi-Futi-Ellis, Espirida-New Hebrides, New Guinea-Humboldt Bay and the Philippines. Richard was a diesel and motor machinist working on The Dry Dock YFD-21 (Yard Floating Dry Dock). He was honorably discharged on March 12, 1946 at the rank of, Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class. He married Marguerite Clark on October 20, 1949 in Iola, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children. Richard was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be remembered as having an ornery spirit but a gentle heart. His quick wit and youthful nature will be missed. Richard and Marguerite moved to Wisconsin in their early years to take a job where his older brother Ogden worked at the car dealership. They found the forty below zero winter weather inhospitable and returned to Kansas, where Richard went to G.I. School for welding in Blue Mound, Kansas. He then worked for a pipeline company near Pittsburg, Kansas for a short time. He then began working as a rural mail carrier for the United States Post Office. He worked as a mail carrier for 45 years. In addition to carrying the mail Richard was also a farmer and a rancher. He was a lifetime member of the American Angus Association. In 1946 Richard was one of the original 44 charter members of the Kincaid V.F.W. Post 7039. At the time of his death he was the lone surviving charter member. He was also a member of the Kincaid-Selma United Methodist Church. Richard was an avid outdoorsman. He especially enjoyed fishing, deer and bird hunting and passed on this love to his children and grandchildren. Richard was a talented woodworker, and made gifts such as quilt racks and shelves for his family. He was an avid KU basketball fan. Richard always made time for his children and grandchildren including many hours playing cards and games. He was known for always chewing gum, and whistling tunes. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Terry and Marietta Adams; brother, Ogden Adams; sisters, Faye Allen, Wanda Phillips, and Colleen Preston. He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Marguerite Adams; two sons, Terry Adams of Berryton, Kansas, Tom Adams and wife Sandra of Kincaid, Kansas; daughter, Twila Gates and husband Marvin of Lawrence, Kansas; six grandchildren, Rochelle McGee and husband Craig of Garnett, Kansas, Ryan Adams and wife Kristin of Wellsville, Kansas, Kaylene Stanton and husband Tony of Wellsville, Kansas, Matt Adams and wife Kara of Topeka, Kansas, Sarah Phillips and husband Ronnie of Tonganoxie, Kansas, Emily Woodruff and husband Ben of Shawnee, Kansas; great grandchildren, Ally and Aaron McGee, Morgan and Bailey Adams, Will, Hudson and Hank Stanton, Berklee and Kolton Adams, Conner, Corbin, and Cannon Phillips; sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Bayless and husband Stan of Wichita, Kansas; brother-in-law, Charles "Buck" Jones of Bel Aire, Kansas; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
