Obituary of Harry Reed
Harry Norman Reed, 101 years and 8 months, passed away, Saturday, February 19, 2011 at his daughter, Mary's, home in Centerville, Kansas.
Harry was born May 22, 1909 near Eureka, Kansas, the son of Alonzo and Kate (Spivey) Reed. He grew up in Greenwood County. At the age of 17 he worked on the first Phillips oil refinery in Texas. He then worked as a roustabout for Phillips before moving to El Dorado, Kansas where he worked for the Skelly Oil refinery.
On November 7, 1930 Harry married Flossie Pearl Call. This union was blessed with six children. In 1947 the family moved to a farm near Parker, Kansas where Harry started a mechanic shop and farmed. In 1964 the family moved to Kansas City, Kansas and Harry worked as a security guard for Pinkerton Security. In 1966 they returned to the farm and Harry worked in Garnett as a mechanic for Serene and Miller then for GEM Farm Center.
Following the death of his wife, Pearl, in August of 1967, Harry married Bernadene Criss in November of 1968. They made their home in Garnett. Harry then worked for the builders of the Linn Valley and Sugar Valley Lakes. Upon his retirement Harry joined the Twin Rivers and Prairie Chicken RV Club. The couple spent several years travelling to Arizona and Texas as "snow birds" until Harry was in his 90's. They then made their full time home in Garnett where Harry enjoyed going to the Senior Center and playing cards there. He also enjoyed playing pool at the pool hall before it closed. Harry led a very active life and loved every minute he could spend with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed going to tractor shows and rodeos with his sons. Harry was a member of the First Christian Church, Garnett.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Pearl; his second wife, Bernadene, on August 20, 2010; two sons, Norman and Ira Reed; one grandson; two great-grandsons; four brothers, Elmer, Vanie, Claude and Albert Reed; and one sister, Ruth Saxton.
He is survived by his children, Mary Morrison and husband, Charles, of Centerville, Kansas; Dennis Reed and wife, Carolyn, of Lenexa, Kansas; Joe Reed and wife, Nayrea, of Wellsville, Kansas; Olive Reed of Garnett; twenty-six grandchildren; fifty-five great grandchildren; thirty-two great great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed by all.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Chapel, Garnett. Interment will follow in the Goodrich Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
