Obituary of Howard Selander

Howard Selander, age 90, of Greeley, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Anderson County Long Term Care in Garnett, Kansas. He was born on February 18, 1920 in Titusville, Pennsylvania, the son of David and Olivia (Lofgren) Selander. Howard attended grade school near Titusville, Pennsylvania area and later received technical training in the U.S. Air Corps in World War II in California. Before entering the military, he played minor league baseball for the Titusville Penn Drakes. His love of baseball continued throughout his life. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1942 and was stationed in the South Pacific. Howard was on the flight crew of the B-25 Medium Mitchell named, "The Joker". Howard met Mary Helen Ohmes during World War II, they were married February 23, 1946 in Kansas City, Missouri. This union was blessed with five children. They moved from Titusville, Pennsylvania to Greeley, Kansas in 1949, where they made their home. He worked for BEHM and Taylor Forge Manufacturing as a machinist, retiring in 1983. After retirement, he carried the Kansas City Star to Greeley residents for many years. Howard enjoyed his pipe, cheeseburgers and his beer. Howard loved spending time with his grandchildren and supported their activities. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, David and Olivia Selander; an infant son, Richard Joseph Selander; a sister, Eleanor Jackson; a brother, Arthur Leonard Selander; one granddaughter, Jennifer Marie Eastwood. He is survived by his wife, Mary Helen Selander, of Garnett, Kansas; four daughters, Mary Leanna Eastwood-Tallmon and husband Ralph Tallmon of Greeley, Kansas; Colette Ruth Feuerborn and husband David of Greeley, Kansas; Karen Renee Tatum and husband Steve of Greeley, Kansas; Stephanie Marie Selander-Decker and husband Kirk Decker of Blue Springs, Missouri; fourteen grandchildren, Christina Wisch; Nicholas Tallmon; Anna Bishop; Christian Feuerborn; Natalie Miller; Rachel Caldwell; Rebekah Steele; Mary Feuerborn; Andrew Feuerborn; Abigail Crismas; Nicole Crismas; Olivia Decker; Avery Decker; and Elliott Decker; and thirteen great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, January 17, 2011 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, burial to follow at the Greeley City Cemetery, Greeley, Kansas.
