Obituary of Barbara Jean Henderson

Barbara Jean Henderson, age 77, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Sunday, November 28, 2010. She was born November 25, 1933 in Humansville, MO and was the daughter of Walter E. and Juanita (Kennon) Dixon. Barbara attended high school in Kincaid, KS where she was named homecoming queen. Upon graduation, she moved to Kansas City, Missouri where she worked at Southwestern Bell as an operator. Her friend Theresa, who also worked as an operator, introduced her to her brother Charles E. Henderson, a handsome young sailor who served in the U.S. Navy. She and Charles Henderson were married September 27, 1953, in Overland Park. This union was blessed with children, Cathy and Butch. Barbara and her family moved to Garnett in 1965. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles in 1984. She had a variety of jobs throughout her life in Garnett. She was a bookkeeper for Patterson Trucking Company, store clerk at Casey's, and a cook at Dairy Queen. Her hobbies included fishing, playing cards, cooking, playing bingo, and spending time with family. She especially enjoyed having the grandkids stay with her during the summer. Barbara was a member of the First Christian Church in Garnett. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She always put her family before herself and never missed the opportunity to tell them that she loved them. She had many friends throughout the years in Garnett and will be greatly missed. She was also preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Jerry Dixon; Barbara is survived by her son Butch Henderson and wife Lisa of Garnett; her daughter Cathy Barnett and husband Matt of Richmond, MO.; her brother James Dixon and family of Quincy, IL; grandchildren Justin Culp of Lawrence, (currently in Sudan, Africa); Chris Culp of Lawrence; Josh Betts, Brady Henderson, and Joey Henderson of Garnett; Daniel Barnett of Kansas City; Jesse Barnett and wife Leanne of Gladstone, MO; Jennifer Weltmer of Smith Center, KS; great grandsons include Benjamin Barnett and Samuel Barnett of Gladstone, MO, and Austin Weltmer of Smith Center, KS. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 1, 2010, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Garnett Cemetery.
