Obituary of Norma Jean Maier

Norma Jean Maier, age 88, of Iola, Kansas passed away Wednesday, July 12, 2017 in Iola. She was born May 10, 1929 in Lamar, Missouri to Earl and Ruth (Kratz) Kunkler. She grew up in Lamar, and graduated from high school there. She married John H. Maier on August 6, 1949. Together they made their home in Iola and raised their children. She served in the Boy Scouts, enjoyed gardening, and will be remembered for taking care of others. She loved the outdoors and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was diligent in keeping up with the news, reading many books, and was a proud Democrat. She will long be remembered for her delicious holiday dinners. Norma Jean is survived by a son, Bill Maier of Iola, a granddaughter, Sarah Maier of Lawrence, Kansas, five grandsons, Benjamin Maier and wife, Cassandra, of Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, Sean Maier and wife, Kelci, of Iola, Josh Maier and wife, Kristen, of Iola, Shane Maier of Iola, and John Maier and wife, Sarah, of Lenexa, Kansas; great grandchildren, Lucas Maier, Kennedy and Elizabeth Maier; brothers, Russell Kunkler, and Richard Kunkler; daughters in law Nancy Maier and Marilyn Maier, both of Iola; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John H. Maier in 2003, a son, John Edward, an infant son, Robert Eugene, and by her parents. Services for Norma Jean will be Saturday, July 15, 2017 at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the funeral service at 10:00. Burial will take place in Highland Cemetery at Iola. In light of Jean's love of children, the family asks that memorials be sent to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church, for their Weekend Backpack Program.
