Obituary of Vernon Ross Hunt

One of "The Greatest Generation," Vernon Ross Hunt, age 95, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2017, at Guest Home Estates in Garnett, Kansas. Born a twin on June 28, 1921 in rural Kansas, Vernon and his sister Fern Hunt Rosser, attended Garnett High School. On August 8, 1980, Vernon married the love of his life, the former Golda Morrison Selanders. Vernon worked in the oil patch around Bush City until joining Brecheisen Oil in the 1980s, and stayed there until his retirement at 70 years old. During his second career, he worked as janitor at The Senior Center until he was 90 years old! His first real job was in the U. S. Army during World War II as an anti-aircraft gunner assigned to a Field Artillery unit. He was one of the many heroes who helped win the historic Battle of the Bulge. While hesitant to speak of his service to our country over the years, Vernon recently shared an eye account of the war. What an amazing story! Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Dora and Ross Hunt; his twin sister, Fern Hunt Rosser; his older sister, Ellis Hunt Ulses; and his wife of 36 years, Goldie Hunt. He is survived by his daughter, Vicki Hunt Montgomery (Doug), his granddaughter, Jessica Frahm (Brian), his grandson, Zachary Frahm, as well as his stepson, Jay Selanders (Annie) and grandchildren Albert Selanders (Laura), Ellie Selanders, Mary Selanders, and stepdaughter, Dr. Jean Selanders Dydell and grandchildren Karina Dydell and Lawrence Dydell. Vernon was a long-time member of the Garnett First Christian Church, the Veteran of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Vernon also enjoyed tending to his yard, fishing, playing poker, playing bridge, dancing with Goldie, and the occasional junket to Las Vegas. A special, heartfelt thanks to the caring staff at Guest Home Estates led by Sheila Wilson and the very kind Crossroads Hospice team. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, May 17, 2017, at The First Christian Church in Garnett, Kansas, with burial to follow at Glenloch Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Vernon's memory are welcome at the Garnett Senior Center and the First Christian Church and left in care of Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 219 S. Oak St., Garnett, Kansas 66032. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.feuerbornfuneral.com
