Obituary of Steven E Phillips
Steven Eugene Phillips age 68 passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Olathe Medical Center. Steve was born on September 13, 1948 in Gas City, Ks. He is the son of Lee and Colleen Gumfory, Steve was the oldest of four children. There were two infants who preceded him in death in Iola Ks.
Steve was a life long resident of Iola, Ks until he was drafted into the United States Army. Steve was an Army Specialist Four and was a member of the 1st Battalion, 69th Armor 4th Infantry Division Steve served in Vietnam where he served to defend his country for fourteen months. Steve received several commendations which include the Bronze star with Valor and a Purple Heart which refused because he felt it wasn't honorably deserved due to friendly fire.
After returning from the war Steve married Connie Lindsay of Bush City Kansas on October 31, 1969 in Bush City, Kansas at the home of Connie's parents and were married for 47 years. Together they moved to Iola and on December 21, 1970 were blessed with twin boys Michael Lee and Mitchell Eugene.
In the early years of their marriage Steve worked with his father Lee at Zero Packing Company. Steve also worked at Williams Monument Company, and was the manager at Iola Cable TV before taking a job with Berg Manufacturing. Steve retired from Russell Stover's.
Steve is survived by his wife Connie of the home and sons Michael and wife Jennifer Phillips of Iola, Mitchell and wife Amanda Phillips of Iola and his parents Lee and Colleen Gumfory of Iola Mother-in-law Dixie Lindsay also of Iola and three sisters, Connie Lee Miller and Roy Caler of LaHarpe, Ks, Roxy Peters of Iola, Ks, and Debbie and husband Lewis Clark of Iola, Ks. Sister-in-law Linda and husband Joe Michael of Humboldt and Cindy Lindsay of Garnett, Ks. Uncle Charles and wife Eunice Lindsay of Oakley, Ks and an Aunt Betty Raines of Leroy, Ks numerous aunts and uncles and nieces and nephews
Steve was preceded in death by Father-in-law Emmett Lindsay three brother-in-laws Vaughn Tomlinson, Jerry Lindsay and Joe Peters and Uncle George Lindsay.
Steve's service will be Wednesday, Feb 8 at 10 a.m. at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service in Iola. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 on Tuesday evening, also at the funeral home.
