Obituary of Bernadene Reed

Bernadene Reed, age 93, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Friday, August 20, 2010, at her home in Garnett. Bernadene A. Young was born on December 12, 1916, at Osawatomie, Kansas, the daughter of Ida Mae Moore and Charles W. Young. She and her parents moved to Eastland, Texas when she was a child. The family later returned to live in Osawatomie, Kansas. She married Paul E. Criss in January of 1935 in Fontana, Kansas. This union was blessed with four daughters and one son. He preceded her in death in 1965. In November of 1968, she was united in marriage to Harry Norman Reed of Parker, Kansas. They settled in Garnett, Kansas. Bernadene worked as a seamstress at Smith Company in Paola, Kansas. In 1970, she earned her LPN license for Nursing, and worked in long term care at the Anderson County Hospital. She loved to knit and crochet, and was an excellent seamstress. She and Harry enjoy their travels together. They would spend their winter months as Arizona snowbirds or winter Texans. She belonged to Twin Rivers and Prairie Chicken camping clubs. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She also enjoyed the Garnett Senior Citizen's Center where they had been active for many years. She was also preceded in death by four sisters; two step sons; one step grandson; and two step great grandsons. Bernadene is survived by her husband, Harry Reed of the home; her children, Margie Criss of Denver, Colorado; Sue Criss Lighthill and husband, Wayne, of North Carolina; Doris Criss Rose of Leavenworth, Kansas; Kenneth Criss of Olathe, Kansas; Jeanette Criss Whirley and husband, Richard, of Tennessee; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and four great great grandchildren; four step children, Mary Morrison and husband, Charles, of Centerville, Kansas; Dennis Reed and wife, Carolyn, of Lenexa, Kansas; Joe Reed and wife, Nayrea, of Wellsville, Kansas; Olive Reed of Paola; twenty-five step grandchildren; sixty step great grandchildren; thirty-nine step great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM, Wednesday, August 25, 2010 at the First Christian Church, Garnett. Interment will follow in the Fontana Cemetery, Fontana, Kansas. The family will greet friends from 7:00 - 8:00 PM, Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church.
