Obituary of Donnie Lee Axtell

Donnie Lee Axtell, age 94, passed away on Monday, December 5, 2016, at Richmond Healthcare and Rehabilitation in Richmond, Kansas. She was born January 19, 1922 in Oakley, Kansas, the daughter of William Barnabus and Flora Mae (VanAntwerp) Day. Donnie lived in Oakley until her family moved to Garnett when she was a young girl. On August 14, 1940, Donnie married David J. Axtell at Iola, Kansas. This union was blessed with five children. They made their home on a farm outside of Harris, Kansas. In 1960, they moved to Garnett, where she lived until her passing. Donnie was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Garnett. Donnie was an accomplished homemaker who is remembered for her Angel food cakes, her gigantic garden and the canning she did from the fruits of the garden. She was also a talented artist and seamstress who enjoyed knitting. Her greatest joy was her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Flora Mae Day; her husband, David, on September 22, 2009; one son, Lyle Axtell; one grandson, Bryan Dale Axtell; four sisters, Margaret Watson, Juanita Day, and Dorothy Jean McAuliff, and Leona Merle Bogart; two brothers, Kenneth and Sam Day. Donnie is survived by three sons, William “Mike” Axtell and wife Judy of Wichita, Kansas, James “Jim” Axtell and wife Carolyn of Montezuma, Kansas, Darrell “Wayne” Axtell and wife Kay of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one daughter, Linda Sears and husband Ronnie of Garnett, Kansas; nine grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; and nine great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, December 9, 2016, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to Crossroads Hospice and left in care of the funeral home.
