Frank & Joyce Martin posted a condolence
Betty & Family -- I have a smile on my face and a laugh in my heart as I remember Wayne coming to City Hall to sell onions. I never wanted a full sack so he'd always come in and ask if Joyce wanted her 2 l/2 onions. Wayne was truly one of the greatest people in Garnett. He lived his life to help make Garnett what a wonderful town it is. When our boys were little, they always looked forward to seeing Betty & Wayne at Penn's Apco.
They had their money clutched tight in their hands as they made their way from our house to the highway. We were never quite sure what they might come home with and what stories they would tell that Wayne shared with them. We will always remember his smile and the fondness he had for everyone he met. We are better people because of him.

Over 40 years ago we met Wayne at Penn's Apco, we liked and trusted him from the start. There is not just one word that can describe him...except maybe love. He loved everyone and they loved him--young and old alike.
Later on when we met Betty and felt the same for her. Garnett is much better for knowing the Penn family and Waynes twinkling smile. As we celebrate knowing Wayne, our prayers are with you.

Diana McIntosh posted a condolence
There are very few folks I really consider a "staple" of Garnett however, Wayne and Betty are two of those folks. I remember Wayne and Betty from Apco and from the First Christian Church. When you say Wayne and Betty you automatically think of the Penn's. They just seem to go together. Betty will be so lost w/o Wayne. Garnett will be so lost without Wayne. For those who grew up around Garnett, for those who frequented Apco, for those who attended First Christian Church; it won't be the same. Wayne and Betty seemed to be so happy and one of the best examples I can think of for respected business folks, admirable married folk, devoted Christian folk, and those folk who always seemed to have a smile on their face. They truly were/are loved and admired. I truly cannot think of enough good things to say or the right type of words that give them true justice.
My thoughts and prayers to the entire family and to the community. Garnett has lost an inspiration.

I am sorry to hear of Waynes passing. I remember him with a treasure of memories starting when I was Coordnator for the Anderson County Eckan Program. Wayne would always be the one to help organize help for our Christmas Bureau. He would help to make sure the Christmas Baskets were delivered to our families.
I also remember his help with the Optimist stand when they had it at the Sprint Go Kart Track at North Lake. He had such a wonderful warm smile, and always a kind word. He is missed I know by those whose lives he touched.
