Obituary of Leonard South

Leonard E. South, 78, of rural Iola, Kansas, died Sunday, February 20, 2011, at his home. Leonard was born March 20, 1932, at Goodland, Kansas, the son of Freeman Earl and Gladys Myrtle (Brumit) South. The family moved from Goodland to LaJunta, Colorado when Leonard was 3. He attended LaJunta schools and helped his father with his trucking business. On April 10, 1952, Leonard married Mary F. Stephens in Clayton, New Mexico. He served in the United States Army from 1953 to 1955 and was stationed in occupied Germany. Following his honorable discharge from the service, Leonard and Mary made their home in LaJunta where he worked for the LaJunta Police Department for 3 years then drove an 18 wheeler for his father's trucking business. In 1966, the family moved to Coffeyville where he worked as a route salesman for Pesi-Cola and was named Salesman of the Year. They moved to Humboldt a year later and he was a route salesman for Wonder Bread and retired in 1994 from Frito-Lay. They moved from Humboldt to their home in the country in 1988. Leonard was a member of the Humboldt United Methodist Church and enjoyed making clocks, cooking and sharing his food with others. He was known as the "Enchilada Man". SURVIVORS: His wife of 58 years: Mary South of the home 2 Daughters: Cheryl Coltrane & husband, Doug of rural Humboldt, KS and Carol Wagner of Independence, MO 1 Granddaughter: Megan Anderson & husband, Todd of rural Humboldt, KS 2 Great Grandchildren: Cole & Haylie Anderson 1 Brother: Lee South & his wife, Paula of Albuquerque, NM He was preceded in death by a son, Richard Earl South, grandson Andrew Richard Coltrane and granddaughter Laura Kaye Coltrane. Cremation has taken place. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 10:00 a.m., Friday, Feb. 25, 2011, at the Humboldt United Methodist Church. Rev. Debby Dick will officiate.
