Obituary of Velma Ashlock

Velma Lorene Ashlock, 96, of Carlyle, Kansas, died Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Allen County Hospital in Iola. Velma was born December 24, 1913 in Yuma County, Colorado, the daughter of James A. and Mary Ella (Schroyer) Fuller. When she was nine months old the family returned to Kansas to live settling near Harris. She attended Harris Grade School most of her elementary years and then graduated from Garnett High School. She spent several years doing house work for others along with caring for the ailing and elderly. On May 5, 1937, Velma married Earl F. Van Wie and they made their home on a farm near Mont Ida until moving to a farm near Colony in 1943. In 1947, they moved to Carlyle. Earl preceded her in death on March 13, 1977. In 1980, Velma married Curtis Koch and he died in 1991. She married Charles Ashlock in 1994 and he preceded her in death on December 25, 1998. Velma was a member of the Carlyle Presbyterian Church and enjoyed gardening, piecing quilts, her home, family and friends. SURVIVORS: 1 Daughter: Rosie Stranghoner & husband, Ronnie of Carlyle, KS 1 Sister: Maxine Gorden of Garnett, KS 4 Step-Grandchildren, 8 Step-Great Grandchildren and 1 Step-Great Great Grandchild A number of nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by a sister, Pauline Kratzberg and three brothers, Claude, Norman and Clifford Fuller. FUNERAL SERVICE: 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 27, 2010, at the Carlyle Presbyterian Church. The Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate.
